About two years ago I started working online doing affiliate marketing. My 1st year I brought in $25000.00 and I was using blogs and free ways to generate traffic. Now I am not sure if this is the recession affecting my sales but since July 08 I have been on a steady decline in sales. In November 08 I had even tripled my traffic but still declined in sales.

I started a training site that didn't really take off as I had hoped but I feel as if I have lost my way.

I don't really know what to do. I do a lot of marketing using web 2.0 and social media but my traffic and sales are both way down. My earnings have dropped 60-70% since last year at this time.

Has something changed that I don't know about?

Something has changed. Your sales have slumped, and you do know about it. That's a good thing because all you've got to do now is figure out the reason why and then come up with a strategy to correct it.

I know that's sometimes easier said than done.

If the same methods that were generating sales before are no longer working, you need to look at your entire marketing strategy to identify the weak link(s) in the chain. The solution may be as simple as tweaking something here or there and then tracking the results to see how sales improve. Or, you may have to drill deeper into your market niche to target an even smaller sub-niche.

That tells me your promotions are obviously working. You are getting people to your site, but your sales copy might need some sprucing up to increase the conversion rate. If yours is an affiliate site there's nothing you can do to change the website copy.

However, if you are using blogs, Squidoo lenses, Hub pages and video as intermediary tools to further qualify your prospects, you might want to look there to discover the problem.

It's possible this training site took up so much of you attention that you neglected your other sites and things got away from you.

Understandable! But that's only a point of view. Think of yourself as being in unfamiliar territory for the moment. In time you'll get your bearings, recognize exactly where you are and know which direction you ought to take to get back on track.

I think Hermas would have given right solution for you. Try to figure out the reason for the drop in sales. There may be quite a lot of reasons for this. Just try to find the reason and fill the gaps.

Yes, it's the recession. There are recession proof businesses and recession resistant ones. Most fall into the latter category.

Yeah,

I beleive that it is the recession too...many people are trying to find FREE ways to make money now and there are some business and programs that work, but its take a long time, well, as with every business, you know?

Well, I hope and pray all is well and your sales begin to incline again...take care!

Recession might be the cause, but have you think if the products that you are promoting are not relevant to the people who are in tight budget.

Judging by the things you are promoting in your sig-line I can
tell you what your problem is:

It's your MARKET - you are trying to get money from the
people first affected and most affected by an economic
downturn, the working poor.

Your issues could be in other areas as well. The marketplace
changes - you have to work on your game to adapt to it
if you want to keep playing.
