Right, I am still in the journey of promoting my website to get to that number one spot in google!

My question, when you are leaving backlinks, does it matter what 'type' of website the backlink is being left in? For example lets say you have a backlink to do with dinosaurs, can you leave this kind of backlink in a animal forum for example??

Also, are these backlinks links that get traffic, or are they used to get you higher in the rankings in google? How exactly does google count these links? I have my link in my signature, so does that count as a backlink when I post my thread????

Help would be appreciated!

Ajay

Lets see the answer to your questions in order;
YES
YES, though because it's so general a dinosaur forum would be better
YES, I know it wasn't a yes or no question but backlinks serve as both traffic generators and page rank increasers.
Google counts them in order from 1 to infinity. JK. Google looks at the backlink to see if it's relevant and also gives more credence to 1 way backlinks. Which is basically when you have a site pointing to you without you pointing right back at them.

Yes it does count as a backlink in your sign, again now people will visit your site AND google will see the best forum online is pointing to YOU! And will give you a better page ranking.

So the long answer is you want to have back links on relevant sites. You want to have 1 way back links from popular sites with high rankings. This prevents me from going and creating 100 free blogs with backlinks to 1 site and being placed in the #1 spot.

This is why IMHO article marketing is so powerful. A good article can quickly climb google rankings and then if it's pointing to your site you get an extra bump in your own page ranking... articles are like one long back link.

I hope that helped

thank you thank you and thank you one more time. You just cleared that up very well for me!

That makes perfect sense, no wonder articles are great, because they will get posted everywhere too right? Fantastic.

Thank you very much, I am off to participate in some great forums!

Wait, I do have one other question, why is it that when I sometimes post on squidoo, my comments don't show up? I have tried with my link and without, yet it still does not show up? Any tips?

You'll have to talk to Newbie Shield about squidoo, that's his forte.
and you're welcome

Also, I have one teeny little question. Let's say one website has my link on that website several times, does that count as just one link? Or are they individual links?

Check out Google's patent, "information retrieval based on historical data"... while it is a long read, it will answer most of your questions.

I have to correct you Gilbert. This forum uses the nofollow attribute for links in signature and hence it won't count towards your site's link popularity.

Here's the general rule for improving your site's link popularity: If it's easy to get links, it won't add significantly to your site's popularity.

Forums, blogs and other medias where you can get easy links by posting comments are more prone to abuse and hence they have nofollow applied. Although there are some exceptions where they don't follow the nofollow. But then such places are so crowded that a link there may hardly give any boost to your site.

However, if you are looking to improve your credibility, and highly targeted and immediate traffic, then forums, like this one, are one of the best sources. Some have claimed to have made over $10,000 by posting in this forum alone.

Your strategy should incorporate a balanced approach of utilizing forums and other medias to generate immediate traffic, and article submissions and other techniques to improve link popularity of your site, if you intend to. I mean there are people who don't bother to create a site and just direct traffic to their affiliate links. They are not bothered about link popularity and just want sales.

That's really a good advice.

It will take some time for you to regard as an expert in a field, so forums are extremely useful for you to build up your reputation, just to add on. For example, you are selling clothes, you may want to join local shopping forums or fashion forums.

And also, when you post in forums, always be careful of what you've posted. Because it's sort of like an evidence, people can refer back to what you've posted maybe months ago.

Hope this helps, =)

Ah ha! You are correct thank you for pointing that out I checked this awhile back and didn't notice it at the end of the link, I always just glance at the front end and didn't see it hiding in the back. Good practice though. I was wondering why your typical SPAM posters weren't hitting here.

What's odd though is that the links still show up in google analysis...so the must look at the link but not count it towards ranking.

Regardless,
I will say that my "organic traffic" from this wonderful site is worth more than a 100 backlinks I can't quite say it's 10k...actually it's no where near that but it has been well worth my time to help people here...not to mention the consistant education i get for free.

I really don't get why more people don't come here

I think one of the reasons there aren't more people in here is that it's a give and take forum and sad to say many people in IM are just takers and not givers. You need to be willing to give/share and like doing it. Helping others is one of the keys to success.

It's not because of the nofollow. This forum utilizes a pre-moderation feature wherein messages of new users are moderated before showing up in the forum. By looking at the messages, you get an idea of the type of users. Spammers are removed and good guys are approved. Therefore you don't see them actually in the forums. They hit, but only on the surface

Actually all forums have this feature, but it's difficult to manage if the forum is very busy. But I possibly can't imagine running a forum without this feature. It keeps the forum much much clean.

People are lazy. They want immediate results. They usually flock to forums where they can get quick links by posting a word or two. They don't realize that the real value of forums is not in building backlinks but building credibility. You reap what you sow.

OK I didn't notice. Sonni said the same thing differently.
