There seem to be so many possibilities. Is it a case of concentrating on one area such as:

Getting links from directories
Blogging
Submitting to forums (like this one), Yahoo Answers etc
Adwords (expensive and not great in my small experience)
Writing articles
Paid SEO or DIY SEO

Or is it best to spread yourself a little thinner and try them all?

Hi Rich,

I think the answer is different for everyone and their circumstances. I personally think the MOST important way to build your site traffic is to create good content that based on keyword research and proper page building.

I don't use any paid forms of advertising, personally. I decided against it when I started. I may give it a try one day, but I'm not ready for that yet.

I do post in forums and Yahoo Answers occasionally. I also submit my sites to directories every now and then, too. I've placed some free classifieds and made some appropriate comments on various blogs.

All of those things I do sporadically as time allows. But the main thing I try to do consistently is add fresh content to my sites. I've been a bit slack over the last month since I was away on holidays, but now that I am back I'll be getting right back into content building.

The search engines seem to love good content sites and reward them by sending free targeted traffic their way. That's the best and most natural kind of traffic to get.

Blessings,
Angie

I think the best thing to do is use all of the above, although I wouldn't recommened diving into PPC advertising until you have had some experiences with the free methods.

I've tried a little bit of everything. I'm primarily focusing on social bookmarking at this point. It's working out great.

I think it is best to promote your site through various traffic methods.
All the above methods plus using traffic exchanges (the right way) and classified ads.

From my personal experience building a site with quality content around your chosen keywords is the best way. After that social book marking and link exchanges have worked the best for me.

Adwords is too expensive and doesn't seem to have the results I was hoping for.

Success with Adwords depends on market saturation. If you are trying to break in on a market that is already established, you are competing against others with higher advertising budgets, and thus it will be more expensive and less effective than other traffic generating avenues.

You don't need to concentrate on one area, spread your time over multiple tasks.

Start with one, learn how to get the most out of it, milk it, and move on to the next one.

Pick a couple that you feel comfortable with and then put all of your energies into those couple. It is not a good idea to spread yourself too thin.

Try to find really powerful marketing tools that are also as automated as possible. That way you can have more time and energy to focus on even more marketing methods.

I would cosign on this as it's what I've done and i'm doing fairly well.

Started with forum, worked my way through content/seo, I am currently in article/affiliate marketing and loving it do death.

I believe, the whole idea is to saturate the market.

After all, we are all here doing pretty much the same thing. If you write articles, than write as many as possible and for several locations.
If you Blog, than keywords and social networking is huge.

But I can't stress enough the need to saturate the market, get your info out there and make it compete with all the others. Make it better and have more.
While quality is very important, having articles written with very specific keywords in mind that can overlap eachother will boost your results.
It takes time, but sooner or later you will get traffic and when you do...it's the best thing in the world. You will work that much harder because you will see that it does work and you can make some money at this.

Yes, I think that trying different things and find what suits you. If you don't like writing articles, don't do it...

PPC is not the way to go, especially when starting out. It will cost you money and you won't get much traffic for it. The people who are doing PPC have done lots of testing and spend a lot of money. If you don't know what your doing, you could easily lose hundreds of dollars.

I would only suggest it after you have done lots of keyword research and are selling a products.

Although, the best way is through affiliates, they do all the leg work and sure they get a good chunk of change, but you also get income and didn't have to life a finger.

It's a win win

When making comments on blogs for the purpose of gaining backlinks, make sure they are "DoFollow" links.
Most newbies would struggle to make a profit with PPC if they were in a highly competitive market.
