I am moving my site from a free host site (below) to a paid .net domain. What's the best way to transition this and keep the small amount of incoming traffic and direct it toward the new site?

Should I use redirect html or is there a better way?

Thanks.

Hi Philip,

I doubt that you have the capability to do a "redirect" per se with a free site. The owners probably wouldn't be willing to do it for you either.

However, you can refer via hyperlink - a concept also known as driving traffic. You'll also get credit for a back link. If your free site should ever gain Page Rank, you might be able to pass some of it to your paid hosting site provided you place the link high on the page.

Good luck,

Thanks again for some good advice Newbie Shield.

I found this site that said that this meta tag would do the trick.

<meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html">

I'm sure that you are right to say that the free site would not change nameservers or something, but this should work effectively.

What do you think?

Hi Philip,

Typically, the owners of free sites won't allow you to manipulate meta tags for that sort of thing but go ahead and try.

Let me know if it works. If it does work I'd like to know where your free site is hosted.

Newbie Shield,

I tried the refresh code and it seems to be working just fine for me.

I hope that I don't get in trouble for giving you the links. I'm not trying to self promote, I just want to show you that it works.

My free hosted site is www.workathomelegit.110mb.com and my new paid domain is www.workathomelegit.net. Now if you go to the 110mb site it should quickly refresh to my new site.

I used the meta tag on all of the pages so that if I have any traffic come in from links on that site, it will redirect them to the new site and I won't lose any traffic.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Just to let you know. I did the same thing for my .org site for now.

This is info for you from the other 'Advice ?' topic.

Hi Philip,

You won't get in trouble for posting the link.

I'll be darned, it does in fact work. I doubt that it will last long and I'm sure that the owners will notice that folks are using their free services as redirects. Not sure how they will react. I'd have to read their T.O.S. I suggest you give it a read to see if they have a public stance on use of redirects.

Usually with free sites, you can't do that sort of redirect. Guess the owners of that platform overlooked that bit. Not too bright if you ask me. Guess there's a first for everything.

A word to the wise though - Google doesn't like that sort of thing and may de-index your free site so that no one will see it. It's an old marketing trick and is considered spammy (I'm not judging you, just letting you know - do as you will). Not sure what sort of impact it will have on your main site.

Depending upon how far along your free site is, you might consider adding hyperlinks to your main site instead of redirecting. That sort of thing is fine with Google ;)

Gotta love their copyright notice at the free site:

"Don't even think about stealing a single sentence from our articles. Else our lawyers will sue your ass bigtime. Especially applies other free hosts who steal 110MB's stuff."

:D

Wow, that is a funny notice! I can't even believe it

Yeah, I'll check out their T.O.S.

I would argue that they probably won't find it since it's just a page refresh meta tag, common to many sites with statistics and other up to the minute content.

I'll monitor the free site to see what kind of traffic straggles in since I'm not trying to promote it anymore. If I can live with the loss, I'll probably just let it go.

Thanks for the words of wisdom!
