Thought this information might be useful for some. Microsoft Live is offering a free .com domain name for small businesses.

This is available only for the countries listed below:

-France
-Germany
-Japan
-United Kingdom
-United States

Unfortunately, I can't use it as I live in Australia. I think it is definitely worth a try if you are planning to start a new website. Simply search for "free office live basics" in google. Good luck!!

I was using this for the last few months. The free part has lots of restrictions and you're limited to their templates, forget uploading your own website unless you want to pay $20+ a month.

I'm having a heck of a time transfering the domain name away from them right now.

Just watch out. Remember it also takes 60 days before you can transfer a domain name away from them if you decide on this route.

Don't forget that it also only cost less than $10 PER YEAR to buy your own domain - you don't have to worry about all of the restrictions that way.

Not sure you want to mess with that when Yahoo offers a domain name for just 1.99 and you can do whatever you want with it. Host it at 1and1.com for 2.95/mo and you have all you need to get started. JMHO.

Free offers will always have some strings attached. When it comes to your own domain name it is better to buy one.

Yoi will go broke doing free offers. I know where you can get a "free" copier . By the time an expert on it looked at the offer, it would have been way more money because you had to buy their ink cartridges.
www.godaddy.com is the best for domains aren't they?
