Could somebody please explain RSS feeds and how they are beneficial to your site? I'm not grasping this concept and I need it explained in very simple terms.

Thanks

Hi Simapr,

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a formatted feed. The language used to deliver the feed is XML, which is a tag-based language not too different from HTML. The system as a whole delivers fresh content from one source to another source.

You can send or receive a broadcast. That's what syndication means.

If you have a blog that allows others to subscribe to your own RSS feeds, they can get the feeds delivered either to their desktop or to their site. Your feed might be a summary or full text of one or more of your most recent articles that you have placed on your site.

If your feed is delivered to a desktop reader, it will save someone from having to visit your website in the case of full text or to let folks know if your full story is worth reading in the case of a summary feed.

If your feed is piped to their web page, they get your fresh content. This gives your visitors something to read that comes from one or more sources outside of your site.

Theory has it that fresh feeds cause search engines to count it as updated content thus rewarding your SERPs positions. However, search engine programmers are aware of this tactic. Furthermore, you'd be placing duplicate content on your site.

It may or may not add value for your visitors. It may or may not be rewarded in SERPs. The duplicate nature may or may not result in lowered SERPs.

Search engine algorithms become more and more complex every month. But know the the best of the best are behind determining what sort of tricks marketers are using to increase SERPs results. They constantly counter a marketer's every trick. Most major search engines have brilliant and knowledgeable teams strictly dedicated to discouraging and punishing those who would beat the system.

I wanted you to know the pros and cons before you started using RSS. Most folks use it on their site to attract visitors, add value, and to let certain directories know that they have an update. Some believe you will get credit for updated content from search engines.

You might Google it to learn more. In either case best of luck.

Thank you both. I truly think I have gained as much if not more knowledge just from this forum as I have from the course I took.

I continue to be grateful that there are people like ya'll out there who care enough to share with those of us who are still struggling to learn.

Hats off to you.

I'm trying. It's just that I feel like I am light years away from contributing something even remotely useful to others.

But you're right. If everybody had my attitude, nobody would learn anything from each other.

I will be a little more confident about contributing from now on.

There is always somebody who is less knowledgeable than you are. So don't worry.
