Is it a good idea to try and sell things catering to a highly specific market? I make chain maille, and while people buy it alot as an impulse buy I'm not sure how much people go online looking to purchase it. Can you choose a too specific niche to cater to?

If the product/niche has a demand reasonable enough to generate sustainable profits, then it's worth catering to. That being said, this criteria may vary from niche to niche. While some niche may require more sales whereas others may require few sales to generate same level of profit. You'll have to do some preliminary research using tools like Wordtracker to find search volumes and competition. You may also want to dabble a bit with AdWords for a while before plunging. Anyway, starting a website or selling through eBay does not incur a huge investment and you can always experiment if you are not short of time.

Hi Purple,

Vishal said it all.

But, to that I would like to add a couple of side comments:

1. I will certainly buy a suite of chain maille armor at some point in the future. I know that there is a market for it. Do you offer both jewelry and chain maille (aka chain mail) armor?

2. Since you make it, I would offer on the net and I would figure out how by doing just as Vishal mentioned - keyword research. I would also look at competitors - especially if you have too few ideas for keyword phrases. Furthermore, competitor research will likely provide a frame of reference for pricing.

The niche sounds wonderful to me. Let us know if you need more tips and best of luck.

Hey purple,
Why not start with something simple like a squidoo lens and let newbie shield help you with that... You will learn a lot about keywords, and just a whole lot of stuff if you let him give you a hand with it. Plus ...Squidoo is a free way to go - to give it a try

Perhaps, you could start a blog as well. Describing your products and comparing it with your competitors.

It will bring interested visitors to view your site if the information you provided is of value.

It depends on how well you know that particular market for the products
